World Masters Wrap Up
The World Masters Games concluded on Sunday October 18 in a vibrant ceremony in Tumbalong Park in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, attended by the NSW Premier Nathan Rees.
The diving competition was conducted at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and was deemed a success according to officials at the event, with a variety of countries represented, including Germany, USA, Canada and the Russian Federation to name a few.
The Australian participants won an impressive number of medals; 8 Gold, 12 Silver and 11 Bronze. With many familiar names appearing to support the exciting masters event.
Among the medal winners was 1976 Olympian Madeleine Barnett, who took home two gold medals from the Women’s 60 – 69 1 Metre and 3 Metre events. Madeleine returned to boards especially for the 2009 World Masters Games, and says that the friends that she has made in diving were the reason for her participation.
Another familiar name on the medal dais was Christian Brooker, who took home three medals, Gold for his performance in the Men’s 25 – 29 Platform, Silver in the Men’s 25 – 29 3 Metre and Bronze in the Men’s 25 – 29 1 Metre.
