New Inter State Competition in Brisbane

Matthew Mitcham
Friday, 20 November 2009

An exciting new competition, the 2009 Down Under Classic, has been added to the Diving Australia calendar this weekend to give divers an opportunity for top class competition prior to the Australian Open Championships in January 2010.

The competition is open to athletes from Diving Australian national squads and members of the State Elite Development programs and includes Open competition as well as Groups A and B.

Twenty four divers representing every State except Western Australia, plus two divers from New Zealand, will take part including Olympic gold medallist, Matthew Mitcham.  Five other Olympians, Alexandra Croak, Sharlene Stratton, Briony Cole, Melissa Wu and Scott Robertson will also take to the boards.  It will be Scott’s long awaited return to competition following wrist surgery after the Beijing Olympic Games.

A host of outstanding young divers from the State development squads will also be participating, all eager to make their marks and gain selection in Australian squads in 2010.

It should be an exceptionally high standard competition and excellent preparation for the Open Championships.
